Religion, Spirituality and Secularization
Introduction
In the sociology of religion, the aspect of secularization is pronounced and has remained a point of debate in the recent decade. Various academicians have posted their claims and ideas as to whether or not secularization is happening. It is in this context that Rodney Stark writes his article, “secularization rest in peace” where he fiercely opposes the nation of secularization and in particular that which was proposed by academicians such as Steve Bruce. The author contends that for about three centuries, social scientists and some western academicians have been claiming the extinction of religion. However, Stark contends that religion has no end and will never come to an end (stark 250). This paper presents a critique of Stark Rodney’s article “secularization RIP.” It will focus on specific aspects of Stark’s argument. In so doing, it will explore some definitional issues about secularization, what it does and what it involves. Besides, the association between secularization and modernity as postulated by Stark will be analyzed. This will result into a critique of the author’s procedural approach to the link between science and secularization. Finally, the paper will focus on Stark’s orientations to the market models of religion that he believes in.
