So Others Might Eat is a nonprofit organization formed with the intent of helping the homeless people in Washington DC. Currently, it is estimated that more than 5,111 women, men, and children are homeless within the nation's capital, which means that they are either living below the poverty line or are struggling to meet their daily basic needs (So Others Might Eat, n.d.). After the effects of the pandemic, there is a possibility that more of these numbers could be observed, with food insecurity in the city expected to rise to 45-60%. Such information is deduced from the observed data where more than 2 million people have filed unemployment claims within the DC area after the coronavirus fallout.
The organization's mission is to help the people of DC to break out of homelessness and the cycles of poverty and provide both material aid and comfort to the vulnerable members of our society by initiating programs and services that are geared toward saving, improving, and transforming the lives of families and individuals, the communities, systems, and structures that affect each one of them (So Others Might Eat, n.d.). The organization endeavors to empower the people being served by ensuring that their dignity is respected and restoring hope in their lives. The third core value is advocacy.
