Global Climate Change
Exercise 1
Global climate change has various effects to the islands within the seas and oceans. The warming of the climate has resulted to melting of sea ice and ice sheets present in the Greenland and the Antarctic regions. The global warming has the effect of the sea levels to rise and further warming of the warmth when combine with other factors. Climate change is manifested in various ways such as weather pattern changes and extreme weather changes. Some of the affected islands are inclusive of Kiribati and Maldives (Wilson Company, 2013).Â
Kiribati geographical location is around halfway between Australia and Hawaii. The island comprises of 32 low lying atolls and one island which is raised. Much of the residents within the island have already moved to one of the islands Tarawam prior the rest of the other land had disappeared beneath the ocean. Maldives comprises of over one thousand one hundred islands found in west India which is the lowest lying state (Karling, 2001). The island average above sea level is 1.3 metres. A bout half million of the residents within the island have been threatened by rising sea levels.
The rising sea level has the following negative impact on the above mentioned islands:-
* There has been increased flooding
* Erosion of the shoreline
* Infrastructure Damage due to extreme weather changes
* Acidification of the ocean and sea waters
* Reduction of fish population in the fisheries
* Increased financial cost for the adaptation of climate change
* Losing of the sceneries and beaches along the shoreline
Exercise 2
Corals are sensitive to temperature changes and most of the conditions are stressful to aquatic animals. The corals which have been stressed they expel symbiotic algae which usually survive in their tissues. The algae are very important in the process of photosynthesis which provides nourishment for the corals. Bleaching also weakens corals exposing them to various diseases and various stressors as well. Bleached corals can recover but if the persistence of the stressful physical conditions will make them to die (Brown, 1990).Â
Most of the regions which have been affected by coral bleaching are Southeast Asia and the Eastern of Indian Ocean. Most of the areas which have hardly hit by the case of the bleaching are Thailand and Malaysia. These areas are affected due the continual increase in temperatures throughout the year and most of the fall months have experienced warmest climate due to the ocean temperatures in the region.
The future for this important ecosystem will need to be protected so as to preserve the aquatic life. Failure to this the corals will be depleted and the aquatic life will interfered with to a greater extend. The management and control of the bleaching of the corals can be done through avoiding of overfishing and carrying out necessary measures to prevent global climate change (Van & Lough, 2009).Â
Exercise 3
Climate change has been one of the sensitive effectives to food production globally. Some of the changes favour the growth of some crops and affect others negatively. One of the negative impacts of the climate to food production has resulted to low yield production of some crops such maize and wheat in the 1980’s (Karling, 2001).
One of the main drivers of climate change Carbon dioxide research has shown that could lead to the increase in production of some foods and crops such as rice and soybeans. In addition the climate would as well affect the quality and length of the season in which the crops grow and these would lead to farmers to experience crop damage. Damaging of the crops would be due to long periods of drought and floods (McCaffrey, 2006). Some of the possible adaptation processes for the change in climate to food production will be through the use of green houses, use of drought resistance crops and use of irrigation schemes during the dry spell
