Observations That Indicate Samantha is a Member of Her Class
According to the material published by the Head Start Center (n.d), the research identifies membership of children to their class as being inclusive of shared experiences (group-play activities and participation in routine activities), a sense of community (all children knowing each other’s name and generally thinking of themselves as a community) and lastly, inclusive support for interaction and social skills.
Samantha in the video done by the Five Head Start/Hilton Foundation Training Program (n.d) displays all highlighted behavior in the sense that she engages in social activities such as group play with her peers such as in minute 1:05, 6:53 and 8:22 of the video, signifying that she is indeed a member of the class. Second, Samantha is familiar with the community in the sense that she knows her peers and teachers and has a personal relationship with most of them as shown in the video. An example is in minute 1:31 of the video where her teacher speaks about her relationship with Samantha and states that Samantha’s peers saw her as a member of her class. The same is also true in minute 1:46 of the video onwards where Samantha’s peers speak candidly about her showing that she is indeed a member of her class. Lastly, the support for interaction is fostered by her teachers through visual displays around the class and also ensuring the children know each other. This can be deduced from minute 4:47 where Samantha and her peers are working on the "Who’s Here Today" board; thus proving Samantha is a member of her class and showing consistency with research carried out by the Head Start Center (n.d).
