Introduction
Health is a critical aspect of human life. The World Health Organization defines it as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being of an individual or population, and not just the absence of diseases or infirmity. It influences the quality of living and also dictates the economic and social status of the population, thereby impacting on life expectancy. Health is a key determinant of the economic status of a nation as it impacts on productivity and the distribution of resources. Governments worldwide in association with other stakeholders within the health industry, including the World Health Organization, are striving towards streamlining healthcare for the benefit of the population and the nation at large. The efforts involve many activities such as identifying areas of concern and formulating standards to guide health practices of professional that are acceptable nationally and internationally.
The United States is one of the leading nations in terms of health care. However, there are persistent challenges that continue to undermine health efforts, most of which can be attributed to the differences in social, cultural, and economic conditions of the different groups of people in different states (Schulz et al., 2002). The main purpose of this research is to compare the health outcomes of the populations in New York and Detroit. It will identify similarities and differences in health practices among other factors and how they impact on the wellbeing of the respective population. Sansoni (2016) defines health outcome as a system reform and a cultural change within the health system that is concerned with the identification of effective health interventions and alternatives that are cost-effective in increasing health value. Detroit has better health outcomes than New York which can mainly be attributed to the differences in the natural and built environment that influences various determinants of health and their interactions including health status, individual behavior and consumption of health, and health production of the population.
