FOCUS OF THE STUDY
The increasing innovations and strategic invention disclosures within a company and its competitive environment in which it operates, increased rate of technological developments, increasingly calls for the evaluation of patent portfolio for better planning and management strategy. Security concerns of industrial and intellectual property also call for more effective and efficient patent portfolio management. As part of strategic evaluation of a Amazon patent portfolio, there is a need for a goal-oriented evaluation of patent portfolio through granted patents strategic evaluation of a company to ensure clear execution of tasks, smooth work operations, and progressive workflow (Ernst, 2002).
Strategic innovation offer means of monitoring, evaluating and administering patents in companies. Companies have a great potential for development in patent portfolio and management, which needs to be realized especially in the problem area of industrial, technological, citation, and intellectual property rights monitoring needs to be addressed (Gerpott, 1999).
Granted patents and portfolio patents are greatest valuable assets of a company. Companies need a conceptual structure to evaluate their patent portfolio through granted patents such as patent activity, technology, patent quality, frequency and performance (Ernst, 2002).
Granted patents currently are vital assets for many companies, especially in high technology companies or industries. Evaluation of a company’s patent portfolio through granted patent is often essential in reaching an informed business decision on a matter involving the company’s technology. However, the intrinsic uniqueness of a granted patent typically makes company’s value assessments costly, complex, and susceptible to inaccuracies. This thesis presents cost-effective and efficient and analytical methods for evaluating a company’s patent portfolio through their granted patents. The patent evaluation aims at comparing and contrasting the management of patent portfolio to the company’s innovative and technological strategy. The evaluation framework employs granted patents determinants and value that are elicited from patent portfolio databases such as international citations, claims, market, technology, performance and patent quality (Gerpott, 1999).
This thesis paper examines the main methodological issues in evaluating a company patent portfolio through granted patents; it describes the characteristics of the framework. It also illustrates the process of evaluation of patent portfolios and implementation of the proposed Amazon Company.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Companies should invest in research and technology as the key element of growth, and economic policy in the company. Evaluation of Patent Portfolio has the effect of determining the steady growth in the company for global competition either through proper planning, management or new product launch. Therefore, it is important the company to evaluate patent portfolio and develop innovative models that can be used to evaluate R&D projects and help in the decision making process. For example, the way the BMW Group has collaborated with global partners in manufacturing, assembling and marketing industry as well as an academic industry to get new engineers for the development of new engines (Ernst, 2002).
Patent Portfolio evaluation is important during problem analysis because it identifies the disadvantages of the present element or component. It also helps in determining the company’s development goals of changing the component through strategic planning, analysis of gathered information and configuration new ideas or creativity. In addition, it helps the management and the company at large to wisely use the resources and granted patents as a means of enhancing performance quality and increasing profitability ratio (Schlagwein, 2005).
