Nursing: Today and Beyond Write a 1500-2000 word essay addressing each of the following points/questions. Be sure to completely answer all the questions for each bullet point. Describe at least three challenges nurses face today in care delivery. These can be ethical, legal, financial, or social. Provide at least one way to successfully overcome each challenge. In the Institute of Medicine’s 2010 Future of Nursing report, the committee developed four key messages. Choose one message, explain the message in detail, and why it is important to the nursing profession. Explain each of the Institute of Medicine’s five core competencies and describe ways in which nursing practice can meet each of these. Identify at least one obstacle for each and explain in detail how it can be overcome. Challenges Facing Nurses in Care Delivery
The nurses have to put up with several challenges in the workplace as they continue with the delivery of health care. These challenges range from ethical, legal, social to financial ones. Most of these challenges are unavoidable due to the nature of their work. They have to face these challenges often.
First, they face the ethical challenge of fulfilling the patient protection rights. The patient has a right to receive appropriate medical care and humane treatment. However, the nurses are unable to ensure that this right is protected with most of them citing the fact that they are understaffed as the main reason. The lack of enough nurses makes their workload too heavy to bear, which makes the hospital environment very stressful for the nurses (Connie, et al., 2010). The lack of sufficient staffing makes it quite difficult for nurses to fulfill the ethical standards of nurse practice. Understaffing creates a systematic barrier in the nursing practice that makes most nurses unable to fulfill their ethical responsibilities. There is only one major solution to this problem. The federal and state governments should employ more nurses. They should increase the number of nursing training institutions and ensure that they absorb as many graduates from the unemployed population to increase the nurse workforce.
Secondly, the nurses face legal challenges associated with obtaining consent from the patient. Ethics and the law require the nurses to disclose information regarding the medical conditions of their patients to them to help them choose their treatment options (Connie, et al., 2010). Ethical and legal challenges arise when the nurse has a differing opinion from that of the patient regarding the best care they ought to undergo.
