Read the entire section 9 of the Theft Act. There is a distinction between 9 (1) (a) and 9 (1) (b).

Section 9 (1) (a) creates three separate forms of offence –

Entering with intent to

1. Steal

2. Commit GBH or

3. Unlawful damage

Each of these can be committed by entering a dwelling (a place where someone lives in) or other building.

These offences are committed once D has entered as a trespasser with the necessary intent, irrespective of whether or not he succeeds in the intended theft, GBH etc.
