Abstract
Dissatisfied and unhappy employees can cost companies up to $350 billion annually (Osborne and Hammoud, 2017). The purpose of this review is to discuss four key insights learned in leadership effectiveness and to explore strategies that business leaders could use to engage their employees and build an effective organizational culture. This paper utilized research from reports and journals to and texts on organization framework to gather four key insights to increase effectiveness. The four insights discussed in this paper are: employee engagement, creating a culture of excellence, communication, and rewards and recognition. Leadership Effectiveness Application Insights
The use of new technology, well trained employees, feedback, and education has helped to increase the efficiency in many major companies.
However, disengaged employees can have a major effect on the overall performance of an organizations (Purcell, 2014). Leaders should make a constant effort to improve employee productivity, which has been shown to have a positive effect on organizational financial performance and organizational growth. Organizational productivity is ultimately affected by employees’ efforts and engagement (Musgrove, Ellinger, & Ellinger, 2014) and is often a factor in the organization’s financial performance.
Companies are making a conscious effort to upgrade management talent to the best and brightest (Bolman & Deal, 2017) who can not only look out for the organizations best interest but the employees as well. Organizations have turned to frames to achieve this balance. Frames are essentially mental models that manages, and leaders can use to help them understand and negotiate through different obstacles. Frames help leaders to register key pieces of information and work fluidly (Bolman et. Al, 2017). An overview of the four frame model highlights structural, human resource, political, and symbolic frames. Using multiple frames both short and long term have had significant and positive effects for managers stating the reframing gave them a competitive advantage and can help develop creative and integrative thinking (2017).
Frames serve multiple functions that can contribute to managerial skills, organization’s structure, understanding people, political views, and organizational culture. Frames allow an individual to look at a problem from multiple points of view to gain clarity and find different ways to solve a problem (2017). In this paper four insights grained from frames will be discussed. To help leaders gain insight in working with individuals and team within an organization.
Leadership and Employee Engagement
Engaging leadership is a leadership behavior that facilitates, strengthens, connects, and inspires employees to increase their workload and increase their overall productivity within the organization (Schaufeli, 2021). Research shows that leaders who show high employee engagement have beneficial results on not only individuals but also on team performance.
Schaufeli stated that engaged employees are committed to their organization, they show a desire to learn, take personal initiative, and show innovation, (2021). By embracing and valuing employee engagement, employees will perform much better than organizations whose leaders do not (Foy et al, 2019).
In statistical tests conducted by Hidayat & Agustina they were able to show that the more leaders engaged with their employees there was a substantial decrease in employee turnovers. If employee engagement decreases employee turnover would increase. By engaging with employee’s leaders can learn what resources employees need to perform their duties to ensure maximum success and will increase productivity. Leaders and supervisors can engage with employees by requesting their feedback in person or through a survey. This can provide the organization with information and tools needed to move the organization in the right direction.
This also shows employees that their opinions matter to leadership as changes are being implemented. The Human Resource Frame focuses on integrating human needs and organizational requirements (Oltman, 2017). In the human resource frame, leaders understand their employees' strengths and unique skills (Bolman et al., 2017)
