Descartes Proofs of Gods’ Existence
First Proof
Descartes introduces the first argument of god’s existence that is based his causal Adequacy principle. This principle states that there cannot be any effect that is not of a causal origin. As such, any effect must have a cause. The principle goes deeper to elaborate that the cause of the effect must have a closely related reality to the effect it produces. This principle was effective in being used as proof of god’s existence because it is actually designed to identify the origin of ideas. Descartes claimed that ideas are the link that humanity has to the world. From this he described two types of reality, the first being objective reality and the second being formal reality (Andrea, n.p). Objective reality covers the representation of an object therefore standing for the idea that is brought about by that object. Descartes gave the example of an apple in which case the objective reality was the idea that was being represented by the apple. From this it is an oblivious conclusion that one thing can represent many objective realities. The second type of reality is formal reality which Descartes brings out as the actual reality that is contained in something. This is therefore the reality that an object has in the world which means its very existence in the physical world (Blogpost, n.p).
