The Hero and the Man

Instructions:
On the ground the sun is cooking on my skin. I crack my eyes open, the sun blinds me. I close them and brace myself to try again. Thoughts in my head run from me. I wonder where I am? How did I get here? Why can’t I remember anything? I try getting on my feet, my legs feel like noodles and my stomach a void pit. I start to look around the ground scorched by the heat and not a sight of water or plants, just the dead remains of once thriving plants and flowing streams. The heat waves dance in the distance but I manage to make out what I believe to be a city. Are my eyes playing a game with me? I wonder. I think to myself I will head there too to find the answer I'm looking for and begin my journey.

“No.” the young man cried, dropping to his knees beside the hero’s body. “no, no, no.” He pressed his hands against the hero’s chest in a desperate attempt to stop the bleeding. He was shaking from head to toe, in an apartment that had just been riddled with bullet holes.
