Family Struggles of a Child with Disabilities
It is one thing to raise a normal child, but it is a completely different thing to raise a child with disability. Families raising disabled children not only have to meet with the daily problem of raising a child, but deal with an added layer of needs posed by the disability at home and community level. Such parents have to present themselves as ready help for the challenges of their child like every parent does. However, several other challenges present themselves for such families.
Communication is the first and a continuous challenge for many. Parents with disabled children have to cope with their many difficulties at communication. Most disabilities present communication difficulties and most parents are left either guessing what their child needs or painfully decoding the needs of their child. For instance, it is difficult to know what their child is going through when they are sick or what gift they need for Christmas as they cannot tell that to their parent or others in the family. On another level, members of the family cannot properly connect with the disabled child and have fun together because of the communication barriers that exist.
