Introduction

This assignment aims for the student to develop an in-depth understanding of the Literature review and different research methods used in development research. As stated by Du Plessis and Maphosa (2017:34), research is one of the critical ways with which we improve our comprehension of the world around us. Therefore when you are about to delve into research there is need for consideration of what is already known on the subject and the methods that are going to be used to collect data so that the study is validated and credible. This essay will consider the usage of desktop research on the study to understand the effects of Covid-19 on socioeconomic development in South Africa.

Research data can be gathered through primary or secondary data. Primary data is gathered through asking experts or people directly involved in an activity of interest or knowledgeable about the phenomena understudy. Secondary data on the other hand involves gathering data from existing studies such as government or company reports, journals, textbooks and many other academic sources available. This then forms what may be termed primary and secondary research. Most academic researches uses primary methods of gathering data for example case studies, ethnographic or phenomenological researches however some uses secondary methods of gathering data like desktop research.

Desktop research is a term used in place of or in interchange with secondary research. The summary, collation, and/or synthesis of prior research is referred to as secondary research.
