The Influence of the Mass Media on the Opinions of the Younger Generation
In today’s globalized world, the mass media undeniably determines culture. The interconnectedness that characterizes what is known as the global village is only possible through the influence and reach of the mass media. The mass media has revolutionized the way the young generation consumes information, entertainment, and interact with each other (Hendry 42). The proliferation of mass media platforms has made it possible for the younger generation to give and receive information, exchange cultural and individual habits, and even dictate lifestyles. Through media such as TV, the Internet, Web 2.0 applications, social media tools, and radio, the Millennials can learn and shape their opinions.
The mass media shapes the opinions of the younger generation by helping them set fashion trends, usually modeled after celebrities and stars in entertainment and public life. The roles played by television and the Internet over several decades continue to expand. Television programs and movies affect behavior through inculcating, albeit subtly, values that each particular medium is espousing. Human beings, especially young people, are highly impressionable, and most of them consume content if attractively packaged. The social media revolution is probably the single most important innovation in the history of the media. Young people are drawn to social media sites, where new cultures, behaviors, and information are transmitted over a vast network. Young people have fashioned their lives to reflect this new trends. The mass media affects youth sexuality, smoking and drinking habits, and violence among the younger generation (Brake 36).
A global youth culture has developed thanks to the mass media (Hendry 29). The global youth culture implies the phenomenon where youth all over the world demonstrates similar tastes in art, music or clothing.
