Eastwick, P. W., Smith, L. K., & Ledgerwood, A. (2019). How do people translate their experiences into abstract attribute preferences? Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, 85, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jesp.2019.103837
The authors set out to determine the attribute preferences of people and how the experiences initiate the ideas of likes and dislikes. The article uses the selection of mates as the ultimate example of how people construct their preferences. The study offers a new experimental method for understanding the intersection between experiences and preferences. The authors examined three different groups of individuals using functional attribute preference as the independent variable and an idealized summarized attribute preference as the dependent variable. In study one, the authors tested the participants' ability to translate independent variables into a corresponding dependent variable. In subsequent studies, the authors investigated how people unearth 'summarized attribute preference' from the functional one under varying conditions.
