In her article” Elder Abuse: Cultural Contexts and Implications”, Yick Flanagan claims that one has to have a deep understanding of family violence to understand elder abuse in a social context clearly. Elder abuse is a common practice in our societies today yet individuals barely notice it. In most communities, the elderly are uncared for, isolated and ignored (Yick Flanagan 3).
Most of the elders lack the energy to leave the house and have to depend on the caretakers for any kind of support, and thus the issue is kept behind the doors According to Yick Flanagan (4), each of our communities bear various notions and perceptions regarding this period of life. Most people view the elderly as a vital aspect of the community. However despite the family being a private domain, it is important to note that elder abuse occurs both in the domestic and institutional settings.
Normally, ethnicity, culture and race impacts the way we view and address human life. She clearly outlines how the racial disparities in the United States has increased elder abuse among the minority groups.
