Emotional Intelligence
Until the year 1990, the only known measure for excellence was the intellectual quotient, commonly known as IQ. Whether IQ was passed on through genes or acquired through experience was still a subject for raging debates in scientific circles. Two psychologists John Mayer and Peter Salovey formulated a new way of looking at human intelligence. This new concept was published in an academic journal article titled “Emotional Intelligence.” Today, the term emotional intelligence has become ubiquitous and shows even in the casual conversations of high school and elementary school children. This article will define emotional intelligence and describe in brief the elements that comprise it.
Emotional intelligence is concisely defined as how well we handle our relationships and ourselves. To have a more in-depth understanding of emotional intelligence, it is essential to break it down to the domains that constitute it. Emotional intelligence is made up of four elements, which are self-awareness, self-management, empathy, and social skills.
