The Intelligent Design
In this article, "The Argument from Design”, William Parley presents his thoughts about the nature and the existence of God. He argues that if we look at the world and everything that is in it, we would find out that nature is a complex entity that portrays the existence of a creator who must be the designer of everything that exists under the sun. This point of argument forms his main thesis that there is nature’s designer, hence his title, "The Argument from Design”. Parley illustrates his points by drawing examples from nature itself. He asserts that the complexity behind every natural thing is a clear indication that there must be some supernatural power in existence, and this supernatural power was responsible for designing and creating everything. This makes Parley conclude that this supernatural power must be God himself, hence the evidence to believe that God exists. Through this well-illustrated peace of reasoning, Parley concludes that God must be very intelligent in the way he designed everything. He also tries to understand God through studying nature, and concludes that God is filled with goodness since he designed everything to be good.
Parley uses clear illustrations drawn from nature itself. He gives different examples of things that exist under the sun, not by chance but through intentional design. For example, he postulates that just as a watch has its designer who made it and intended it for a specific purpose, nature also attributes its characteristics to a being that created everything in it and intended them for specific purpose on earth. Since we do not have the knowledge of how nature was designed, it would be true to assert that nature’s designer is a being whose artistry is beyond humankind’s understanding. Parley draws our attention to the manmade watch. Though a watch is not a natural thing, he uses it to illustrate the point that someone must have designed it for a specific purpose. I find this argument convincing because it is actually true that what nature contains has never been created by any human being. As parley discusses, nature’s ability to reproduce and ensure continuity of its species should be clear evidence that the power behind all that design is unfathomable.
Many scholars, including theologians and philosophers, have since come up with different arguments about the nature and existence of God. Some scholars, like Parley, have used nature as the main evidence to support their assertions that God exists. It is arguable that some forms of nature are so complex that they could not have just occurred by chance. Take for example, the human body has numerous complex organs that depend on each other it to function and maintain health. It is true to assert that it must have been designed, hence the conclusion that there is some supernatural power behind it. The fact that no human being has ever designed anything that is the same as what was created is a clear indication that the power behind nature’s existence is beyond man’s understanding and must therefore be attributed to a supernatural being. As discussed by Jones (156), nature is composed of complexities that scientists have never explained. This is what forms the basis for taking nature as the evidence that there must be a designer behind everything.
It is arguable that nature is made up of different phenomena that coalesce to portray the intelligence behind their creation, and this intelligence is what has eluded many scientists for years. The occurrence of Earthquakes, hurricanes and tornadoes has been explained by scientific theories, but the intelligence behind these natural phenomena is what makes them hard to understand. Scientists have therefore agreed to include the concept of a supernatural power behind these natural phenomena. Thus, they acknowledge the power and the intelligence of the designer, and incorporate the concept of the designer in their attempts to understand nature. This leads us to the concept of Intelligent Design (ID) that Parley adopted. Under this concept, the proponents of ID acknowledge the presence of natural laws, and assert that the unexplainable behind these natural laws is what makes the existence of nature be attributed to a designer (Jones, 156).
The arguments presented by Parley strongly support the fact that we cannot apply the scientific method to find out whether God exists. Science, for example, is based on experiments, observation and repeated research. Not all these techniques can be used to know whether God exists or not (Hindson, Edward , and Ergun 61). The only sure way we can be certain about the existence of God is through looking at how complex His work is. I find this point of view convincing because it is evident that the ID theory gives sound explanation of something on which we would never apply science. For example, through research, it was proved that the force of gravity actually exists. This is science, and it is what has been used with evidence to study gravity. The same procedure is what science would require in proving the existence of God, which would never yield any conclusive answers.
