Your house is your most substantial investment or financial asset. It has taken you a lot of effort, time and money to make it unique for your loved ones. You have worked hard over the years to make it a home for you and your family, and now you decide to leave it to someone else.
Therefore, it is evident that you want to make a good return out of it, having spent a lot of money on the house. However, making a good return depends on the preference you make when selling it. You can either hire a real estate agent or choose to sell the house yourself. When you understand the pros and cons of the mode of selling, you would be in a position to make an informed decision.
Hiring an agent spares you a lot of work as the agent will price, list, advertise, show the house to the buyers and sell it on your behalf. The agent does the mediating and negotiating work. You relax knowing that the agent will take care of everything well and that she will get the best out of your house, anyway, this determines the amount of commission she will earn.
Selling the house yourself has its advantages; that you will not get to pay a commission to an agent, which is usually between 5 to 7 percent. Also, when you are selling the house yourself, it is easier to schedule visits because you are working around your own time and not an agent’s time. You are also able to meet the buyer in person, an advantage since you get an opportunity to negotiate for the price and you also get to know the person who will be living in the house.
To hire a real estate agent or to sell the house yourself, the decision depends on the amount of work and time you have at your disposal and the amount of money you can spare if you don’t pay an agent’s commission.
