Article used: The effects of immigration on the labor market outcomes of United States native workers for 1980--1990: The role of skill level, English-speaking ability, and ethnicity.
Author: Alfred O. Gottschalck
Alfred, (2000) used 1980 and 1990 US data based on census results. The study was to ascertain whether international immigration negatively affected the labor markets and business opportunities in the United States. It was on the male and female native workers. The scholar also wanted to examine whether ethnicity, their ability, language or levels of skill depended on these effects of immigration. The approach in this research was an observation of the number of labor markets and relating these to the outcomes such as wage rates. Skilled and unskilled workers formed study sample. The study estimated a fixed- effects model and used a cross- sectional model. The debate of whether immigration affected the labor and various markets among the native people in America remained answered until the findings of this research came up. Immigration negatively affected the white and black native employees’ labor outcomes. Loren (2013), adds that the less- skilled and the semi- experienced felt most of these effects. The consequences for the labor market among the Hispanic native employees faced these effects after the recent immigrations. The less- skilled workers among the Hispanic residents did not have their labor outcomes affected to large extents. Immigration among the less- skilled people was the reason for the weak relationship between the labor market outcomes of the native workers and the international immigration. According to Alfred, (2000), if the skills of the immigrants who arrived in the United States are not adequate, then there would have been more detrimental effects on the less- skilled native workers. The research concluded that immigration affected the natives’ labor market and outcomes (Reed, 2001).
