As the front line of defense against the virus, healthcare workers have had to contend with long hours, heavy workloads, and the risk of infection. In addition, healthcare workers have also had to deal with the emotional toll of caring for patients who are critically ill, as well as the fear of bringing the virus home to their own families. In light of these challenges, it is more important than ever for healthcare workers to prioritize self-care and self-compassion. Self-Care Self-care refers to the activities and practices that individuals engage in to maintain their physical, mental, and emotional health. For healthcare workers, self-care can include things like getting enough sleep, eating well, exercising, and finding time to relax and unwind. It is important for healthcare workers to establish regular self-care practices in order to maintain their own well-being, as well as to be able to provide the best possible care for their patients. Research has shown that self-care practices can have a significant positive impact on the mental health of healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. A study of healthcare workers in China, conducted during the early days of the pandemic, found that those who engaged in self-care practices had lower levels of stress and anxiety than those who did not (Li et al., 2020). Another study, conducted in the United States, found that healthcare workers who reported engaging in self-care activities were less likely to experience burnout (Shanafelt et al., 2020).
