In Arthur Miller's play The Crucible, John Proctor is a prominent, dynamic but tragic character. Seven months before the play begins, he lustfully has an affair with Abigail Williams. He conceals his transgressions from the public since he values his good name and reputation. However, Abigail's jealousy for his wife catalyzes the witch trials and seals his hanging. Despite his flaws, Proctor is a courageous and selfless man willing to die for his good name and end the witch trials' hysteria.
In the beginning, Proctor is a prominent member of the Salem community. He is an honest, outspoken, hardworking, and highly regarded member of the community. He is a father, farmer, and husband in his thirties who goes out to work on his farm each day (Miller, 2015, p. 20). Giles and Francis all but confirm this when they seek his help after their wives are arrested. He does not forgive himself for cheating, and neither does his wife. In Act two, Elizabeth questions why he stayed out so late on the farm (Miller, 2015, p.49). As a result, his relationship with his wife Elizabeth is strained in most of the play. However, he still maintains his uprightness, goodness, principle, and observance of Puritan faith principles. Therefore, Proctor is initially a tormented and conflicted figure who refuses to own up to his infidelity because he does not want to jeopardize his reputation.
Proctor is a dynamic and memorable figure whose persona develops as the play progresses, revealing his true nature. He is a man of his word who is not swayed from his principles. Proctor admits to the affair with Abigail in court to end the witch trials controversy. Furthermore, he refuses to sully his reputation by signing a phony confession to be nailed to the church door (Miller, 2015, p. 143).
