The book selected for review is entitled “Hatchet” and was written by Gary Paulsen. It is a survival mode novel which was published for the first time on September 30, 1987. The publisher for this novel is Simon and Schuster Books for Young Readers.
Story
Climax
The climax of any story can be considered as the turning point that decodes the overall outcome of plot. The climax of this novel takes place when Brian ultimately finds a path to the tail of plane after it was hit by tornado. Within the tail are treasures that he believes would continue his life after the crash.
Conflict 
The conflict in this story can be divided into protagonist and antagonist. The protagonist of any story is the main character which experiences some kind of change. In the case of hatchet, the protagonist is clearly Brian Robeson. He is a thirteen year old boy who has to take decisions calling upon intelligence and innate skills in order to find ways to survive in the Canadian woods. Brian Robeson is also deeply hurt after knowing the secret about his mother and the manner in which the affair led to the divorce. He must put aside this secret to survive in the woods of Canada.
The antagonist of any story can be defined as the force that acts as an obstacle for protagonist. In this story, the antagonist can be defined as Nature as well as all the dangers he faces. Brian must act to live within the limits set by Nature and accept his face. Another antagonist in this story can be Brian himself as he has to overcome his own fears and obsessions and learn to live with them.
Beginning and End
The novel is a narrative that is told omnisciently about the survival of Brian Robeson. The survival lasted around fifty-four days in the wilderness of Canada. The story depicts the maturing of Brian as he comes of age in the desperate situation. The beginning of the story depicts the rising action as he plane crashes into the Canadian woods and Brian is forced to find ways to survive. The story continues in the middle as he learns new skills every day and starting to mature. The end of the story is relatively relaxing as Brian learns new skills ultimately he is rescued.

The main character is Brian Robeson as the novel mainly deals with the themes of nature and man as well as self-actualization and self-awareness. Brian has been portrayed as an exceptional dynamic character. While Brian demonstrates frustration, vulnerability and even anger at the beginning. Experiences in the Canadian woods changed his perspective forever. The perspectives changed to observation, patience and appreciation for nature.
Another character in the novel is the pilot. The pilot depicts the unexpected moments in one’s life. The pilot appears to be kind person as he teaches Brian to control the plane. The novel also include Brian’s parents as they are with Brian all the time in his mind. His father helps him in dream to make fire in the woods. Most thought of mother are the source of hatred and pain in Brian.

The novel takes place in the New York and the woods in Northern Canada.

Themes
One of the main themes in the novel is determination and perseverance. This is particularly evident in the way Brian learns to solve various life- threatening problems.
