Textual Analysis of Mandela’s “The Long Walk to Freedom”
The essay entitled “The Long Walk to Freedom” is written by Nelson Mandela. The essay analyses how Nelson Mandela previously thought he was free only to grow up and realize that the freedom at his father’s compound was only an illusion. Then, Mandela starts to yearn for freedom at an individual level. Later on, Mandela realizes that it was not his freedom that matters but the liberation of the entire society so that all people could live in self-respect and dignity. The hunger for freedom drives Mandela into joining the African National Congress (ANC) to fight for the liberation of both the oppressor and the oppressed. As a member of ANC, Mandela advocates for the freedom of all people regardless of their diversity and mindsets. He believes that the oppressor needs liberation from narrow-mindedness and prejudice since he (oppressor) is a prisoner of hatred which robs the society of humanity. This paper analyses how Mandela’s walk to liberty was a responsibility aimed at liberating the oppressor as well as the oppressed.
