The book by Leila Ahmed's talks about transformation that occurred during the 19th century in the Middle East. This was during the time when there was economic encroachment in the region and with dramatic political, social and economic transformation. This was also accompanied by increased modernization which also led to the decline of Arab socialism during the 19th century.
