The author of Good Study is a seasoned educationist with impressive thirty years of experience teaching both new college juniors as well as seniors in various methods of undertaking college study tasks. The author introduces the students as novices to the academic programs and elaborates how the students need to interpret the approaches their tutors and professors for easier coping. The book not only gives a checklist of methods and how to apply them, it explains how the entire educational system functions and how a student must fit in to benefit. Book Review: Good Study
Dr. Burdess is a prolific researcher and educationist in Australia who have written extensively over his thirty years of experience as a tutor and student guide. In ‘Good Study’, the author have borrowed extensively and actually reviewed from the previous publication “Handbook of Student Skills”. Many books on college education and learner preparedness often place too much emphasis on the demand for good academic outcomes. Nonetheless, the author is very categorical about grades that effective learning habits, time management and discipline among student translate into the good grades as well as the other desirable college scholarship outcomes.
The book is intensely practical in approach and should be appreciated by a vast array of students and their guides. The approach in the writing of the book allows for greater dialogues and reflection among readers which makes the chapters very appropriate. Learners are apt to experimenting and mastering new concepts. The study of their personal dispositions and what priorities to set is a core concern with the author. Suffice it to say, the author makes a case for greater student autonomy and independent choice in a number of ways. Good Study explains in very great depth the methods students need to inculcate to sustain an organized approach.
After the first chapter that talks about getting organized, the author explains in the second chapter on lectures that every student needs to create time for their lecture sessions. Regardless of the study program, virtual learners must create time in advance to ensure their lessons and adequately attended. In the next chapter on tutorials, the students must participate actively in their group work and follow up with their lectures on their assignments. Moreover, the author regards the necessity to take tutorials serious because it is through such sessions when students learn very critical and practical aspects of their courses.
Chapter five and six talk about the process of exams and the need to have books while in college respectively. About examinations, Dr. Burdess maintains that each student must make adequate preparation and undertake effective revision to score highly in tests. Moreover, due to the different programs of study, various students might be remotely stationed; it is advised that such students must gain access to adequate learning resources either through online or by postage early enough to enable effective and exhaustive reading and mastery of the contents (Burdess, 2007, p 80). In chapter seven, the author insists that students need to gain access to current journals because they point the direction of research in the particular discipline the student is studying.
