Introduction
In his book “The Power of Critical Theory for Adult Learning and Teaching”, Stephen Brookfield tries to analyze how critical thinkers can incorporate critical thinking in processes that are inherently political. According to Stephen Brookfield, it is essential to develop critical thinking skills in order to provoke critical thoughts. The discussion topic aims to provide readers with fundamental insights into critical theories of analysis. According to Brookfield, ideology maintains and justifies inequity. Brookfield suggests that ideology is a system of values and ideas that support or reflect the established orders. Ideology manifests itself in the daily decisions, actions and practices (Brookfield 42). The author is particularly poignant in his illustration of the subtle ways in which ideology operates at the cognitive and social level. Brookfield’s definition of ideology is reasonable and conclusive. However, people might fall victim to the differing ideologies. This might happen to people who are socially marginalized. Brookfield states that it is essential for people to thoroughly examine the frameworks that operate behind the scenes in order to face the known and its implications to social justice. Within any ideological principle, there are variations in acceptable actions and thoughts. These variations allow for negotiations during the evaluation of the positions of people. Failure to reevaluate positions may force people to operate outside their subconscious mechanisms of control.
