The Great Gatsby: Characteristics of Jay Gatsby and Tom Buchanan in Relation to Daisy
“The Great Gatsby” is a fictional American novel authored by F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1925. This essay is going to focus mainly on two main characters, Jay Gatsby and Tom Buchanan. Jay Gatsby is the protagonist in this book while Tom is the antagonist. The main link between these two characters is Daisy Buchanan, a one time lover to Jay Gatsby but now Tom’s wife. Another aspect of this book is the adulterous nature of many characters. This essay is going to compare the characters of Jay Gatsby and Tom Buchanan comprehensively, how they had similar attributes and also their differences in relation to Daisy.
Nick paints Gastby as an ambitious and wealthy man. He is a wealthy lad although little is known of how he made his fortune. However, Nick sheds light on this matter as he later came to know about Gatsby’s historical background. Nick says that Gatsby was born to a poor family and he made his wealth mainly through the motivation of wanting to be a rich man.
