The tale of the Bird
Introduction
“The tale of the bird” illustrates the felling of a young lady with the sensation that, she had little or no proper attention from her parents while young. At her young and older ager, she has attributed her mind to inferiority and insignificant. The insignificance is however cleared by the love from a man she later meets in her life. They get married and gives him the description of the best person in her life. They are, however, living in a lonely place. At one point, she finds an injured bird and takes care of it to regain its ability to live and fly. The story was by Emma Donoghue’s Kissing the Witch. Hans Christian Andersen wrote the story about Thumbelina. It talks about a tiny girl no bigger than a thumb that is stolen by an eminent ugly toad and as a result has several adventures to makes many animal friends. (Donoghue) (Tanner and Andersen)
The gender issues, roles and, stereotypes changes in tales: tales are a child’s world imagination and pleasure. The stories also give a source for inspiration and role models. The stories tend to portray that women are weak and vulnerable and only succeed when a man intervenes. Both male and female genders tend to assume that women belong in particular types of jobs. (Donoghue) (Tanner and Andersen). This stereotype has changed today since women have proved that they can do just about any job that men can do. The cultural belief that women are soft and need support or are in some way inferior being are far less apparent than in earlier times.
Figurative language is the use of figures of speech to be more compelling, persuasive and impactful. I the tale of the bird there is the use of simile which is a figure of speech that states comparison. There are metaphors as well the use of metaphors which make a hidden comparison between two things that are unrelated. Personification is also a situation where an idea or an animal assume a human attribute. The gender roles in the stories are interrelated. In the two stories, the females are portrayed to have the same functions. The mothers are more concerned about bringing up of the young ones and giving them the care and protection that they need for them to come up as good people in the society. (Donoghue) (Tanner and Andersen)
The interconnectivity of the two stories, the story of Thumbelina and the Tale of the Bird has their basis in the styles used to put forward the stories. At the same time, the themes in the stories are somewhat similar between the two stories. Personification vastly applies in the story of Thumbelina. The use of the flower as the main character is one kind of a tremendous tool that has made it a success in delivering the point and the message in the story home, to the readers. Looking at the story of the Tale of the Bird, the same style of personification has been used, to deliver the message about the themes of the story. The bird, in this case, is narrating her story in a more vivid way to capture the readers’ attention. (Donoghue) (Tanner and Andersen)
In my opinion, the personification is so effective in this story that someone can fail to realize that this is a story that revolves around the life of a bird. The story is full of vivid description too. The narrator tells every bit of the story in a more vivid way to clearly show what happened in her life. In the story of Thumbelina, the case is more or less similar. The figurative language is vast. The frogs, flowers, and the butterflies use in a more symbolic and personified way to represent the humans and to help in telling the story.
