Book Review: Why read? by Mark Edmundson
Introduction
‘Why Read’ presents intriguing arguments on the role of literature in contemporary society. Therefore, understanding the author’s intent and the book’s content is vital in augmenting my humanities knowledge. Therefore this book is evaluated with real-life application in mind and an open mindset to gain insights into the value of reading. It is crucial to point out that reading has gotten new meaning over the past few decades. Students and scholars alike are more interested in gathering information on the historical context and elements that do not augment the exact value of books. In so doing, they demean the value of literal sources and especially the value of books as cultural guardians. Edmundson’s position in 'Why Read' paints a picture of a humanities scholar disappointed by recent developments in the field. He, therefore, writes to warn lectures and inform students to embrace the value of literal sources. He posits that they are not only sources of information but a life force influencing morality in society and providing direction. The author presents reliable evidence on the significance of reading and gathering information for application in real-life scenarios. Therefore, this book review is a vital source of information applicable for humanities students and those guided by the wisdom contained in books.
Evaluation
Aristotle, one of the greatest philosophers, posited that educating children is giving them life. He claimed that reading plays a central role in augmenting the art of living. It is the foundation of self-awareness and thus fosters wisdom in individuals. Edmundson’s book supports these thoughts by presenting critical arguments on the significance of reading. His position as a humanities lecturer is vital, providing reliable evidence of his position. It is also evidence that the author supports the school of thought that aligns humanities with psychology. The book’s reference of Sigmund Freud and Shakespeare indicates that the author takes a liberal approach when highlighting the significance of reading. Furthermore, his categorical imperative based on postcolonial, Marxist, and hegemonic ideologies is crucial. In hindsight, Edmundson makes sense as his arguments are well-grounded, with observation
