Sex is one of the concepts that captures most individuals’ attention, and the fact that is used in most advertisements makes it even more appealing. In her article ”Sexual Addiction” , Marich-Merkin asserts that most programs in the televisions, movies and music reveal sexual content which vastly impacts the modern audiences as well as poses an adverse effect on the young generation. Typically, sex is fascinating and intriguing but clinicians claim that there exists a stigma that relates to sex (Marich-Merkin 3)
According to the Marich-Merkin (4) Americans suffer from sexual addiction due to the stigma attached to reporting the issue. The author feels that sex addiction should be addressed as a health problem and the graduate programs should incorporate the initiative of educating the health providers on human sexuality. Clinicians should therefore be equipped with information on the core subjects, for instance healthy sexuality and sexual compulsivity.
She expounds on other major topics that relate to sexual addiction, for example, the family aspects of sexual addiction and the barriers faced by the professionals when handling sexual addiction. The author seeks to educate the clinicians on how to treat sex addicts within the clinical settings and standards.
