Chapter 11: Code Official and Code Process
Introduction
The book discusses the code process from the introduction to the endpoint on furniture design; this chapter talks about the code officials and the steps followed on design approval. An interior designer must ensure that the interior design should follow regulations stipulated on the code standards and federal regulations within the jurisdiction; each jurisdiction is governed by defined codes that are only applicable in a given geographic area. The codes are the entity in which the authority decides whether the interior design follows the standards. It can also be defined as the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ), which means that individual code officials have the mandate to review and approve interior design within their jurisdiction by examining plans, buildings, safety equipment, and special constructions.
Code Review and Enforcement
The jurisdiction size dictates the size of the code department, which gives the Life Safety Code (LSC) the mandate to review the code requirements and the administrative process. The review by code officials within a jurisdiction must also follow specific agency regulations. These include the state and local agencies that must also inspect constructions, such as schools and hospitals. New designs must also follow guidelines from sustainable programs and federal laws and regulations. A sustainable program enforces the green globes for buildings and schools, and federal laws govern the design of federal buildings based on ADA standards.

Preliminary research during the code process should occur during the early stages of designing, and its primary purpose is to identify any arising issues and conflicts within the code standards. Disputes may arise within the code, and when such is encountered, an appeal can be made through the code officials. Once the appeal has been settled, a review is done, and the construction is given a permit to proceed. Upon final inspections, a certificate of completion is issued, and the project is commissioned.
Documentation and Liability
Codes and standards in interior designs are continuously updated based on the sustainability of the growing number of different types of projects. Designing a project is easier, but it is crucial to be up to date with both strict and standard codes that will govern the project. By following the code standards, the codes can allow room for innovation, and this will save on cost, given the proper understanding of co-relat
