“Am I really a leader?”
The way leadership is recognized nowadays is regarded as a developmental perspective. Based on this idea leadership is a process that is developed and nurtured when an individual matures. It can take several years for it to be considered to have established. Leadership can also be accompanied by events within the lifetime of an individual (Northouse, 2015). For example with the case of Sally where her leadership started from writing as an advertiser but along the way, she passed through various events like being a freelancer, author, interviewing people, and finally becoming a real leader when she was recognized intentionally as the speaker. The truth with Sally is that her leadership did not just emerge, but it was as a result of self-awareness, internalized moral perspective as well as a relational transparency within her that existed over her lifetime (Northouse, 2015).
It is true that the idea of self-awareness describes a lot of things to a leader since it is a process that enables an individual to understand herself/himself. It also makes someone aware of his/her strengths and weakness, more so it opens someone mind to understand his/her attributes, emotions, identity, key objectives, as well as the values she has towards other people (Segil, et.al, 2003). Addition to this, a leader who is aware of herself constitutes of various character traits, and he builds more trust on this character. There is a definite sense that exits among leaders because they understand themselves who they are, the objectives they have, what they want to achieve, what they admire to be in life, and lastly the most important thing they are going to stand for at a given time. As a result of this, they interfere with the psychological thinking of other people as others think they are not on the right track (Segil, et.al, 2003).
In the case study concerning Sally Helgesen, you can leisurely notice that at first, she did not have self-awareness as she took-over her trip to New York. As a result of this, you can see that she doubted herself to an author, but finally to be uninterested (Helgesen & Johnson, 2010). After realizing her character of having hope, she can create the self-awareness within herself and moves ahead to know it. On the other hand, she conflicted whereby she visualized herself as a professional professor of the college and as a freelance writer. Sally was thinking about how she will come up with the best solution concerning the issue. It is seen clearly in the case study that she had more values of being a writer as compared to a college professor hence this illustrates the role of self-awareness in Sally Helgesen story of leadership (Helgesen & Johnson, 2010) .
The authenticity of the Sally Helgesen’s leadership can be described as the most important form of leadership style because it made her be in a state of competition within her battle. It can b...
