The events of the case involved three gentlemen, two guards who were East New York Long Island Rail Road employees and the third one, a passenger. As the passenger was trying to rush and catch a moving train, one guard who was in a car, pulled him into the car, and the other guard, tried to push the passenger into the car. The passenger dropped a package which is alleged to be fireworks. Upon hitting the ground, the fireworks exploded leading the whole train station into a panic by sending shock waves. Scales were knocked down leading to Mrs. Helen Palsgraf sustaining injuries. This fact led to Mrs. Palsgraf suing the Long Island Railroad company for negligence. A series of court event then began as The Trial Court heard Mrs. Palsgraf story. This move caused the Long Island Railroad Company to appeal more than once after affirmation by the Appellate Court.
