Why is RICO considered the single most important piece of legislation ever enacted against organized crime? What are the criticisms leveled against the law?
RICO gives extended penalties in prosecuting against organized crimes. It tackles federal crimes as well as criminal procedures. It is applicable on mafias and different organized crimes. The Rico Act is applied in prosecuting all criminal activities (Siegel, 2003). Racketeering crimes will relate to bribing, extorting, drug selling, loan sharks, murdering and prostitution after he has been involved in some of the federal and state crimes in a period les than ten years.
The Act does not have legislation for punishing the actual commitment of the organized crime. The RICO Act is criticized because it does not cover all the crimes that are not directly related to the racketeering and it will be possible for some of the criminals to escape without being trapped. It will be possible that different criminals will have committed crimes that are related in some way or another to those prescribed under the Act but their lack of inclusion will make criminals walk scot free.
