Multiculturalism and Diversity Final Exam
Part 1:
Question 1
Growing up, I believed that girls are supersensitive and crybabies hence cannot succeed in challenging activities such as sports. For me, this explained why they did poorly in tough subjects such as math and science. It is something that I thought was common knowledge, even among the girls themselves. Thus, I used to isolate them and look down on them until I learned from the course that biological make does not affect people’s temperament or characters. Social, cultural factors determine how individuals respond to different situations. I also learned that these kinds of stereotypes too contribute to these differences; therefore, I decided that in the future, I will consider girls as just capable in every field as boys and will interact with them and associate them so that they can beat these stereotypes. This is because anyone can be sensitive or crybaby or fail in math regardless of their gender.
Question 2
In a world of increasing diversity, the workplace is characterized by different cultures. Being culturally aware enables me to understand and appreciate different cultures, and therefore it will help me break cultural barriers and relate well with colleagues and management. For instance, cultural awareness helps me look at women as just competent as men and hence diverse the same respect and understanding; if my supervisor is a woman, I will be sure to respect her the same way. It will also help in teamwork and inter-professional collaboration as I will be able to make friends and get along with people from different cultural backgrounds, which is crucial in my line of work. On the other hand, lack of cultural awareness is a source of conflicts at the workplace, including sexual harassment, which is rampant in many places of work.
Question 3
Stereotypes are generalized and distorted beliefs about a certain group, usually based on identities such as gender, race, sexuality, age, etc. An example is a stereotype that black people are violent, which makes every black person target for blame in case of violence. On the other hand, Bias is more personal and disproportionate like or dislike towards an individual, object, or group. An example is when companies prefer hiring older individuals because they think younger people are lazy. This makes it hard for young people like myself to find work. Finally, prejudice is a preconceived negative opinion against a group, individual, or idea largely due to insufficient information. An example is having a negative attitude against a new black teacher because you think they are not qualified.
Question 4
I once applied for a part-time job at a particular company, and the day of the interview, there was one older applicant. Interestingly, all young applicants, including myself, were offered the job leaving the older guy. Later, I learned that the organization preferred younger employees because they were more motivated and had straight minds than older people. I felt bad for the older guy because I imagined he needed to feed his family and was unfairly disqualified from the job. I then decided that if I ever become an employer, I will only consider academic and experience qualifications and not use identity to favor some people over others.
Question 5
The media plays a critical role in how people perceive different cultures. Whether through TV shows which portray black people as poor or magazines and social media that present “an ideal woman” as a thin one, media influence people’s opinion on different cultures. To help influence others from media bias and stereotypes, I can create a blog or start a YouTube channel where I expel negative untruthful cultural opinions by providing facts and research.
Part 2:
