Redeployment of Soldiers
Redeployment is the transfer of soldiers and their fighting equipment to go and provide reinforcement to another joint force. Redeployment can further mean sending out again soldiers or reassign them to a new location where there is the emergence of a new fight. Redeployment can also be used to refer to the return of the soldiers and their material to go back to their original to interact with their families. This paper seeks to highlight the reasons for soldiers’ redeployment, and its effects, or impacts, based on Phil Klay’s collection of short stories, Redeployment.
A case study on why soldiers choose to redeploy is that of Redeployment by Phil Klay. Phil Klay is a veteran marine corps of the United States who served during the surge in Iraq. Redeployment reflects Klay's personal experience and that of his platoon in Iraq. Klay, therefore, tries all his best to take readers through to get a gist of the frontline of wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. He gives a glimpse of what transpired and the impact on the soldiers who were redeployed. The narrator says, “give me a Nam with a V, give me the Medal of Honor, it doesn’t change that I am still breathing.” (OIF, page 75). This means that all that matters to a soldier in a war zone is survival.[Schaap, James C. "Redeployment Pro Rege 43, no. 3 (2015): 35-36.] [Klay, Phil. Redeployment. Penguin, 2015.]
In his collection, Redeployment, Phil Klay reveals the brutal and vulgar nature of warfare behind all the good things such as heroism and victories that the media often paints. Despite compiled in form of short stories, he shares a devastating experience that a soldier in Iraq goes through in connection with their war reckons when they are redeployed back home. Through
