THE ROLE OF THE LIVER IN METABOLISM
Abstract
The liver plays a crucial function in metabolism and regulates the concentrations of fat, glucose, and energy metabolism in the body. Blood glucose levels are maintained in various ways by the liver, including glycolysis, glycogenesis, gluconolysis, and gluconeogenesis, among other processes.
Administered free fats are used for energy, membrane construction, or storage in the liver, while those that originate in body tissue are metabolized and excreted from the body. In addition, the liver plays a critical function in maintaining the normal level of cholesterol in the human body. The liver uses cholesterol to synthesize bile acids in a complex manner. Vitamins and fats in the diet and medications, hazardous chemicals, and other xenobiotics must be absorbed and transported by these bile acids. There is hepatic detoxification, in which the liver breaks down numerous medicines to produce substances that are easily excreted from the body. In summary, the liver performs so many vital metabolic tasks that, if disrupted, could lead to a wide range of liver disorders.
