Company Background
Founded in 2008 by co-founders Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia, Airbnb's idea came when the two wanted to raise money to pay the rent and decided to rent an air mattress in their apartment. They called their service "Air Bed and Breakfast," creating the company's name, Airbnb. Chesky and Gebbia created a trusted community marketplace for people to list, discover, and book exclusive local travel experiences provided by local hosts (Koskinen 2016, p. 23). In simple terms, Airbnb works like this: information about your listings, including price charges, the amenities the property has, and a description of the property and information about yourself as a host. A traveler accesses the website or app, chooses an ad he likes and accesses the book.
The traveler then pays the fare the host has decided, in addition to any additional charges, such as cleaning fees, a security deposit, and guest fees, the host approves the booking.
