Traits Associable with Ethical Leaders
Ethical leaders guide people and organizations in line with respect for ethical courses of action, values and beliefs as well as respect for the rights and dignity of others. As such, they possess certain traits that allow them to do the right thing, regardless of the action’s inconvenience, lack of profitability and unpopularity.
One of the traits of an ethical leader is respect for other parties, particularly followers. Ethical leaders respect and value people around them by being attentive, valuing people’s contribution and being generous and compassionate CITATION Sha14 \l 1033 (Sharif & Scandura, 2014). This trait can be seen in both CEOs. Doughtie states that respect for each other is key to the alignment to a common sense of purpose.
A different trait is leadership by example. Rather than seating back and letting the followers do all the work, ethical leaders usually lead from the from by being actively involved in organizational decision-making and operations. Tim Cook is a good example of this trait as he has been at the forefront of Apple’s success for nearly a decade, a period that is attributable to robust growth and development of Apple Inc. Doughtie, on the other hand, is a strong believer in inclusion in everything a team does CITATION Zha13 \l 1033 (Zhang, et al., 2013). She implies the need for all members of a team to engage actively in seeking solutions to common problems, regardless of rank in the organization.
