Is the Study of International Relations truly global?
Refugees are migrating individuals subjected to perennial problems from national secessionism, resource conflicts, deteriorating relations between communities, and border disputes between territorial powers, which compel them to escape for greener pastures in foreign nations (Betts, 2011). The significant nature of refugees has been due to dramatic events of the twentieth century that were characterized by constant chaos, political misunderstanding, and genocides. The impact of all these human conflicts was expected to be documented and highlighted in international relations classes to serve as reference points in developing diplomatic angles of solving conflicts and modifying politics that alienate states from the potential refugee crisis. However, this has been neglected by a world that has cajoled itself in egocentrism and realism, whereby nationalism has been grounded in building power, creating revenue and solidifying claims to international borders and regions (Rosch and Lebow, 2018). Refugees are a global crisis, but the amount of considering subjected to them raises questions on whether the study of international relations is global or selectively global.
The purpose of International relations is to capture and systematically develop theories that correspond with the relations between states and the impacts of the states on the general human society. The study as stated is relatively new, but it has been defining in procuring effective theories such as critical theory, feminism, normative theory and other theories that explain the structures of global powers and the inherent nature of change with consequences on the global trade and interaction (Acharya, 2014). It is plausible to admit that international relations have been a global study, particularly affiliating with political science to understand interstate interactions. Despite this, a question still arises, has it been truly global?
