Introduction
The recruitment and selection process are some of the prime processes in human resource management. These processes enable managers to identify, and recruit potential employees who have shown capability in achieving their goals. The process is of great importance to both parties equally having expectations about the kind of employees needed. The process should be able to explain duties and the time frame for completion. Managers should understand their duties making proper decisions and documenting them. The process should be strict and all parties participating should observe code of conduct overseeing the process. This paper seeks to discuss recruitment and selection process at Enterprise Rent-A-Car Enterprise.
History of Enterprise Rent-A-Car and the role of human Resource management
Enterprise Rent-A-Car was established in the year 1957 by Jack Taylor at a car dealership basement in St. Louis USA. With only seven cars the business began rising to become the largest car rental firm in North America. Today the business has over 7,000 offices in situated in the USA, over 900 in Canada, UK, Puerto Rico, Ireland and Germany. As at 2007, Enterprise Rent-A-Car had 728,000 functioning cars and more than 65,000 employees with a 4.5 billion pounds annual turnover. The firm has four operating units that help in operations: Enterprise car sales, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Enterprise Rent-A-Truck and Enterprise fleet management. Even though customers might be different, whether private or business, they all need convenience, reliable and fast services. Over the years, competition has grown in the car rental industry different range of services developing to ensure customer needs are met. Aside from just renting cars at airports and strategic city locations, Enterprise Rent-A-Car replaces cars for accidental repairs, short holiday rentals for special occasions and courtesy cars for garages. Another service which is also admired is that they collect clients taking them to their hired cars. Ensuring customer satisfaction is very important in business. This is because business growth is dependent on customer satisfaction. The more satisfied customers are, the more they come frequently and bring others. Enterprise Rent-A-Car accentuates the delivery of quality customer service often being rewarded for the good job. The business also encourages employees to critically think allowing them to make independent decisions for the achievement of goals.
At Enterprise Rent-A-Car, the human resource manager is tasked with the responsibility of hiring, training, disciplining and dismissing staff. The human resource department has engaged employees in trainings and development programs making them get promotions thereby achieving their potential. Training and development programs also allow the business to maximize the already existing talent. It ensures that external recruitment need is eliminated since all the employees are capable of working well within the organization. The cost of hiring new staff is also high; this process saves the business money because any need for new employees is eliminated. The human resource division of Enterprise Rent-A-Car also plans for future staffing needs giving the business an easy expansion operation for instance when they were launching into new markets. Planning also allowed Enterprise Rent-A-Car to incorporate technology into their daily routine facilitating global positioning. The labour market is dynamic, it is therefore important to closely monitor it for any major changes that require strategic decision making e.g Planning strategic recruitment. Enterprise Rent-A-Car promotes it managers on an annual basis. The managers are sourced from within the business graduating into a managers program in Ireland and the UK. The business requires employees who are self driven, motivated and posses’ initiatives to achieve the goals set.
Attracting applicants
The businesses policy of creating career opportunities and promoting managers from within has had positive results. This is because employee retention is increased making the business profitable all year long. With the high growth rate and diversification, external recruitment is inevitable. This is because sourcing employees from outside brings on board new skills and capacity. Enterprise Rent-A-Car also uses Campus brand managers who are interns to raise awareness of the business. The business also uses activities like holding career firs, mentoring programs, developing clubs and skills sessions in universities to attract students who are potential applicants. Students also are encouraged to visit the business to learn how they operate and the opportunities on offer. Enterprise Rent-A-Car provides an attractive salary and other benefits like training emphasizing on careers as opposed to just jobs. Employees at the business have a chance to progress into various departments of interest e.g human resource, risk management, finance, vehicle acquisition among others. Over the years Enterprise Rent-A-Car has been able to expand incorporating people of diverse cultural backgrounds. The business emphasizes on the need for a rich and diverse background of staffs stating clearly that it is important to have a global face.
Recruitment
Enterprise Rent-A-Car has developed an online recruitment process where applications are received improving efficiency. The website contains all the jobs that are available and the registration function allowing an interested individual to easily apply. The website also provides information about the businesses’ culture and values giving applicants a chance to evaluate whether it fits him/her or not. Enterprise Rent-A-Car has many avenues through which new recruits can enter through. One of the main one being internships. This is an opportunity given to university students who are in their second year allowing them to gain experience. When interns work exemplary well, they increase their chances of being employed once they graduate. They usually begin in a class room training then progress into a branch office where they are further trained. They are exposed to the same responsibilities as management trainees being able to learn about customer service, sales, business management, marketing and administration support.
New recruits can also enter the business through a graduate management trainee program. This program offers graduates a career path that offers quick progression and self-development. Within8-12 months, an employee can progress to becoming a Management assistant then assistant manager. The main job of a new recruit can be diverse including ensuring customer service is best, marketing and selling then business, and dealing with partners e.g insurance companies. The business has managed to advertise job opportunities not only on their website but also in other forms of media e.g magazines and newspapers. Enterprise Rent-A-Car has developed a website and a devoted recruitment brand showing opportunities and a medium where interested students can interact with the firm. The website also has success stories of the firms’ employees to encourage students. During peak times, Enterprise Rent-A-Car uses special recruitment websites to attract the as much audience. It is estimated that about 50% of employees in both UK and Ireland were recruited using the website strategy.
