My considered opinion is that Walmart should give better benefits and increase their employees’ wages. The company should focus more on offering competitive pay to its workers, heath care benefits, more training, bonus opportunities, discounts on its merchandise, and an opportunity for employees to move up the promotion ladder.
Walmart is among the largest U.S private employer with around 1.4 million employees. Increase in wages, free short-term disability to full-time workers, and allowing workers to accrue paid time off will not only help these employees but also the company itself. Walmart has for many years being criticized by labor groups for mistreatment of its employees, mainly through poor pays. Increasing the wage to about $15 for every hour worked will help clear its tarnished public image (Barnett 36). The raise would also be beneficial to the employees who previously received low wages compared to their work efforts. It will make them happy, which will see them offer quality service to all customers who enter any Walmart shopping outlet. Walmart faces competition for talent from other retail companies like Target and Amazon. Offering of poor services or mistreating their employees’ means Walmart is risking losing its talents to Target or Amazon. Therefore, it needs to maintain its employees by keeping them motivated, by making them see Walmart as a place of opportunities, where hard work is fully compensated and employees can go as far as they want (Hausman and Ephraim 57). In contrast, low wages will demoralize them, make them offer poor services to the customers, and the end loser will be Walmart, as customers will run to Target or Amazon in search of better services. Additionally, other retail sectors are increasing their employees' wages, and if Walmart does not increase its wages, the beneficiaries will be Gap and Ikea. Therefore, Walmart needs to eliminate the talent competition by increasing the wages for its workers and offering better benefits.
Health care benefits and discount on merchandise for workers will help them care more about Walmart and committed towards the attainment of its goals and objectives. Improved training for the entry-level workers will see the employees improve their communication skills, customer service, and merchandising. The benefit derived from this action will see a reduction in employees' complaints. Instead, the workers will focus on their individual production as the improved benefits and wages will create an environment where people are willing to work at Walmart. The changes will also see improved customer service, a benefit that will help in boosting the company’s sales. Employees enjoy working in a place that guarantees them their financial protection. They avoid taking sick leaves, fearing the companies will hire someone else as a replacement. I think Walmart needs to assure their employees that they are financially protected, by improving the short-term disability program. The employees will also benefit from a simplified paid time off policy. These benefits will make employees feel secure even when they are away from work due to injuries or illness. The company also needs to realize that helping their employees grow through increased wages and improved benefits helps the company grow as well. Increased sales due to increased engagement scores between customers and employees result to increased profit levels, which is the main aim of the company.
I believe that if Walmart improves its benefits and offer $15 per hour to its employees, the company will see a difference. The employees will be motivated to be fast and friendly to the customers. Stress levels for many employees will reduce, as many have families to look after. I believe the profit of around $120 billion, which Walmart makes in a fiscal year, is enough to increase the wages and improve employees’ benefits. The company only needs to improve the wages slowly to avoid losses, which may come in due to gradual operational changes. The company also has to avoid any conflicts during the implementation period. It needs to consider the needs of old employees as well as those of the new employees. Walmart also has to acknowledge experience differences among its employees. I do not believe that new employees need to get equal payment to that of older employees. The reason being, the old employee, will feel left out, even with hi...
