Gideon a middle school dropout spent his early days as a drifter. Moreover, he spent his time in and out of prison for non-violent crimes (Kelsey 309). The case against Gideon was breaking in intending to commit a misdemeanor. The defendant appeared in court without seeking the service of an attorney. In the courtroom, he asked the judge to appoint an attorney for him because he could not afford it(Kelsey 309). However, the law stipulated that an attorney is appointed for a respondent suspected to have committed a capital offense and could not afford to hire the service of a counsel.
The case US v. Wade involved a bank robbery. Wade was the respondent of robbery of a federally insured bank. Wade represented himself having failed to notify his attorney of the court proceedings. The robbery incident was replicated in the courtroom with the robber and other persons wearing strips of tape on their faces and repeating the words the robber had said for identification purposes. It is through this that the two bank employees identified the respondent as the robber.
The common thing with the two cases that is Gideon v. Wainright and US V. Wade is the violation of the sixth amendment. On the other hand, Argersinger v. Hamlin case is a decision to reinstate that an accused person cannot be imprisoned without being provided with a counsel. This is provided in the sixth amendment. The sixth amendment ensured that every respondent has a right to counsel. For the case of US v. Wade case, he had an appointed counsel. However, he appeared in court without notice to his counsel. On the other hand, Gideon requested an attorney to be appointed for him based on his financial incapacity, but his offense could not permit(Kelsey 309). Therefore, the three cases complement each other in outline of the issues of the sixth and fourteenth amendments.
