THE ROLE OF EMPLOYEE MOTIVATION IN MODERN MANAGEMENT
Introduction
Motivation is used to describe those processes that people seek to satisfy their basic drives, their perceived needs and personal goals. It is a process that starts with physiclogical or psychogical deficiency or need that activates a behavior or a drive that is aimed at a goal or an incentive
Need: This is created whenever there is a physiological or psychological imbalance e.g. when the body is deprived of food
Drive: it is a deficiency with direction – actions which provide an energizing thrust towards reaching an incentive e.g. - need for food translates to hunger (drive), need for friends translates to a drive for affliation
Incentive: This is anything that alleviates the need and reduces the drive restores the physiological or psychological balance
1 The role of employee motivation in modern management
Motivation plays a very important role in modern management as it is the driving force behind individuals that impels them to action.
1 To improve in productivity, quality and service
While management may control the direction of the business, the actions of employees are what directly determine the rate of production. The cumulative effect of their levels of motivation has had a huge effect on how productive a company is. Employees who are paid well, offered profit sharing options and told how necessary they are to the company are less likely to engage in these practices that undermine productivity.
2 Reduce employee turn-over/Retention
Hiring and training is an expensive process in a business. A firm that is able to retain skilled staff and minimize turnover will decrease that expense and increase its profits. When an organization creates a corporate culture that nurtures motivated, engaged employees they are able to retain talent for long.
3 Increase efficiencies in processes
When employees are motivated there are increased efficiencies resulting in financial gain. The company is able to achieve its goals because employees work hard to achieve their goals and in turn the company will have achieved its goals.
4 Increase capacity to adopt new technologies and methods.
Conducting different training is a way of motivating employees therefore, this makes it very easy to adapt to new technologies and methods because the employees understand that to be able to attain their goals it also comes with the change in technology and methods.
5 Increase innovation in strategies and products
Due to motivation employees have increased job satisfaction and morale therefore they are encouraged to come up with innovative ideas which are more important to the organization.
6 To builds a friendly relationship
Employees can remain loyal to the organization only when they have a feeling of participation in management. When they are well motivated they are able to develop that friendly feeling and their productivity eventually goes up.
7 Contribute to better utilization of resources
Hiam, (2003), indicate that employee motivation contributes to better utilization of resources. Employees who are well motivated feel a sense of ownership and they will not want to waste the resources as they are part of the organization.
Conclusion
Alderfer ERG theory of motivation states that when a higher order growth needs are stifled or cannot be met due to personal circumstance, lack of ability or some other factors, the individual is likely to regress back to lower order needs and feel these needs more strongly
For example, if a person cannot move up the corporate ladder and is stuck in a job he does not like, the individual is likely to emphasize social relationship both on and off job and become...
