A railroad will often have a set of railroad freight cars. These are going to be attached to either one locomotives or even a number of them. These are going to have specific schedule, route, departure and the arrival date. More still, it can have one or more crews in it. The process of scheduling is controlled from a central location which is the operations department. This work is done by the scheduling clerks.

The master schedule is a database table that contains all the information regarding the scheduling operations that are done in order to meet the customers' demands. It contains the following functional elements, the location of origin, the train number, location of destination, and time of departure and the expected time of arrival. This helps in making all the scheduling operations to be efficient.

This need for assigning the routes is needed because there are many different routes a train can use to get from point of origination to point of destination. A route often consists of a starting point, and ending point and a series of intermediate way points or connections.
The route is identified by unique 6 character identification code which is used to identify the route. The assigning of route is done in a route assignment table while all the intermediate routes are ignored in the database.
