Descriptive grammar refers to the rules guiding how a language is used in writing and speech; that is how the users of a language outlay rules and grammatical aspects of a language (Bear & Knobe, 2017). An example, in the sentence “I was going to comeback nowhere.”, this sentence has no problem from a descriptive point of view because someone who has passed it to another person who uses the same language and understands the meaning has constructed it. On the other hand, prescriptive grammar refers to the standardly set rules guiding how a particular language should be used with reference to a given natively created linguistic model. That is focusing on discussing oh how a specific language should be used. It can be likened to the doctor’s drug prescription, which states all the instructions of using a drug, and that must be followed. An example, in the sentence "I ain't drinking anything.", the sentence is not grammatically correct from a prescriptive point of view. It is wrong because ‘Ain’t’ is not a proper English word and is considered slang; the statement also has double negative words.
The descriptive grammar describes that language use can vary according to the speaker or writer; therefore, it does not concentrate on the usage's correctness or incorrectness. On the contrary, prescriptive grammar bases on rules created by the native users of the language to govern how the language is used, and any variation from that and is treated as incorrect (Konnerth, 2016). In prescriptive grammar, the rules are already defined, therefore not flexible, while in descriptive grammar, there are no set rules and the speakers and the users of the language set the rules daily.
Prescriptive grammar shows how a language should be used, having an interest in preserving and classifying language. In contrast, descriptive grammar shows how a language is used to understand the metamorphosis of a language (Pyo, 2018).
The two sides of grammar are in continuous agony because the descriptivist holds on to descriptive grammar, being the best approach in creating and using a language. Simultaneously, prescriptivism also believes strongly that prescriptive grammar is the best approach in using and observing the rules of a language.
