Introduction
Stroke is a disease which occurs when the blood flow to certain parts of the brain is cut off depriving brain cells in that area of oxygen leading to their death. The death of the cells leads to disabilities to the body parts they control. Disabilities can be a loss of memory and problems with muscle control. Hemiplegia is the most severe form of stroke which causes complete paralysis of one side of the body.
Signs and symptoms of Stroke include the inability to make movements or the loss of the sense of feel on one side of the body, having problems while making utterances, and feeling like the world is spinning, and the loss of vision on one side. Stroke management is carried out to help reduce the injury to the brain and to promote the maximum recovery of the patient. Psychologists and physiotherapist play a significant role in the rehabilitation of stroke patients.
Role of Psychologist in Patient Rehabilitation with Stroke and Hemiplegia
Clinical psychologists are part of stroke recovery teams; they are trained to perform the duty of assessing, formulating and treating psychological disorders including neuropsychological evaluation and the management of cerebral impairments.
Some of the effected caused by infliction by stroke include Anger, Distress, and Anxiety among other feelings. Psychologists in rehabilitation train the patients on how to adjust to those feelings and how to view life positively (Chae, 2015).
The clinical psychologists carry out Neuropsychological Assessment and help in Cognitive rehabilitation. The Neuropsychological Assessment determines the extent to which cognitive deficits have affected patients using a standardized, psychometrically efficient gadgets and which monitor the change in their cognitive functioning.
Psychologists help in identification of the types of difficulties encountered by individual patients in their daily lives and while in the rehabilitation.
Role of Physiotherapist in Patient Rehabilitation with Stroke and Hemiplegia
Physiotherapy is essential in the rehabilitation of stroke patients because it assists post- stroke patients to progress through all the stages of motor recovery. Physiotherapy involves various activities that help stroke survivors to learn how to balance themselves so as to move without much struggle. These activities include correct positioning to ensure that muscles and body joints remain flexible and free from pain (Chae, 2015).
Physiotherapists assist rehabilitating patients to restore their excellent functional potential within their abilities and needs (Teasell, 2008).
In hospitals, people stricken by stroke are supported by p physiotherapists to learn skills that will go a long way into helping them adapt to the home environment.
Physiotherapists assess stroke survivors and make plans on the most efficient aid for the normal movement’s recovery.
