Introduction
Soviet Union also known as Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) was formed in 1917 and lasted up to 1991. The union was created when Alexander Kerensky was overthrown by Vladimir Lenin. The union consisted of Russia known as Soviet Federated Socialist Republic and fourteen other nations referred to as Soviet Socialist Republics (SSR). Russia was the largest country in the union and therefore Moscow became its capital city. The union was formed so that everyone gets equal economic and social rights and thus there was no personal property.
The Soviet were divided into smaller autonomous republics also called ‘kraia’ or ‘oblasts’ that made easier for the country to manage. Basic research was conducted in mathematical, physical and social sciences that led to the development of new technology in governing the territories. In the early 1980, the US army doctrine was adopted for generation of combat power using land and air assets on an extended battlefield (Podell 32).
The social, economic and political challenges were experienced among the Soviet Unions in which some led to its eventual collapse. There was economic stagnation among the Soviet states because they concentrated on heavy industry technology while the other western states engaged into new technologies. Alcoholism and absenteeism was social problem that affected the Soviet states because the alcohol, vodka was the consumer product. The Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) was a monopolistic party that dominated the cultural, social, economic and political life of the Soviet states in which many people opposed "The Soviet Union" (Podell 35)
The electoral process has changed and there is free and fair elections of both the legislature and the executive. There is also legal protection of press freedom and the rights of journalist are protected when they go to carry out investigation. Decentralization of powers was observed after this era.
