Cardinality
Also known as the degree of relationship, is the number of instances that an entity A can be associated with another entity B. There is a maximum and minimum cardinality in any relationship. An unspecified cardinality is shown as N. Cardinality limits are mainly derived from external constraints or organisational policies.
There are three main kinds of cardinality:
1 One-to-one (1:1)
2 One-to-many (1:M)
3 Many-to-many (M:N) and not (M:M)
One-to-one (1:1)
59367966088300This is a relationship where an entity’s occurrence relates to a single occurrence in another. This is a rare relationship though it still exists. For example, a driver in a company is allocated a vehicle. Only a single driver can drive a single at a time.
In this case where Entity1 is the driver and Entity2 being the company vehicle.
One-to-many (1:M)
This relationship involves the occurrence of a single entity relating to many occurrences in another entity. An example would be where many employees are able to work in a single department. This is a one (department) to many (employees) relationship between department and employee.

In this case where Entity1 is the department and Entity2 being employee.
Many-to-many (M:N)
This is a relationship that has many specified on both cardinalities and are very common. Many occurrences of an entity similarly relates to many occurrences for another entity and vise versa.
